A Few of My Favorite Things
This post could also be called "The little things keeping a bride going". It's spring... the days have been absolutely gorgeous lately (and long) as we plan for our wedding-- now in a little more than two weeks! And I still have a ton to do!
As someone who loves weddings (and takes photos of them for a living!) it's been fun to be on the other side of it all and in the drivers' seat. There is one thing that is definitely true though: planning a wedding is like a full-time job! Especially when you try to do it without the help of experts-- I'm having a ton of fun with the DIY projects, but wow, are they ever time consuming! (I can't wait to post photos of all the little projects after the wedding! Keep your eyes peeled for that blog post.)
Now that we are in crunch mode, I'll admit, I'm a full-on ball of stress. I haven't gone Bride-zilla on anyone. It's much more my style to internalize-- though I do dream about pulling out a healthy "How DARE You".
But, since that's not me, these are the things keeping me sane and happy these days:
My favorite flower is in season right now. The season for peonies is so short compared to other blooms that the second I see the first ones in the store, I grab them!
After I picked up these stunning hot pink ones at Fred Meyer, I set up a little scene to show them off. This photo is exactly what my happy place looks like. (You'll just have to imagine it's in an adorably quaint cottage in the English countryside.) A Kaladi latte served in a fancy teacup, a Jane Austen novel, bunting, and a pitcher of freshly picked peonies.
Don't you just want to crawl into this photo, curl up, and read for hours? I do!
Another favorite is also in season right now! I feel like it's so much easier to be health-conscious in the spring & summer... the fruit tastes like candy, and the days are too bright and warm to not be active outdoors. The only thing that could make me happier than a tub of blueberries this big is a bucket of freshly picked ones-- but that will be soon enough!
3. And the last thing keeping me sane right now is the occasional self-care.
This one takes on different forms depending on the day. Many days, I've succumbed to the crazy amounts of pressure and body-shaming that seems to come with planning a wedding. (The minute I changed my facebook status to engaged, the pages filled with ads for weight loss supplements and body wraps-- as well as photos of the many waifish-looking brides in their designer dresses, made with less than a yard of fabric, most likely.)
Some days the self-care ends up being letting myself off the hook for the second workout of the day. Others, it ends up being me going to a movie alone, drinking a beer and eating pizza for dinner. Sometimes it is as simple as closing my laptop and putting away my to-do list.
Last week this self-care thing was pretty easy on the day I had my bridal makeup trial. Makeup Artist, Caitlin Gilpin, came to my house and worked her magic. I felt so beautiful afterward, and looked at the whole thing like a mini spa treatment.
I know in the grand scheme of things, everything will be wonderful and there's nothing to stress about. I can't really take that message to heart yet, but it's on my to-do list. :)
